Building the Future: Collaborative Insights in Architectural Design and Practice
Brief introduction and summary of the experience:
The host entrepreneur, Maria Diaz, and the new entrepreneur, Izabel Todorova, connected through the Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs (EYE) program, united by their shared focus on architecture and design. Izabel first learned about the EYE program through a colleague in Italy and pursued the opportunity to explore Spain’s renowned practices in adaptive reuse architecture, particularly in Barcelona. Motivated to gain hands-on experience and insights into managing an architectural firm, Izabel aimed to learn about day-to-day operations and design methodologies for existing buildings. Maria, a seasoned architect and entrepreneur, welcomed Izabel into her practice and provided guidance beyond design work, including project management, tender submissions, and handling client relations. This mentorship gave Izabel a strong foundation for her future goals while Maria benefited from Izabel’s fresh ideas and critical perspective.
Description of activities completed:
During the exchange, Izabel immersed herself in all facets of architectural practice under Maria’s guidance. She contributed to project design, competition participation, and execution documentation, gaining practical knowledge at every stage of the process. Izabel also engaged in ‘behind-the-scenes’ activities, including office management, budgeting, marketing, client communication, and project scheduling. This holistic exposure enabled her to understand the operational challenges of running a practice. Maria encouraged Izabel’s independence, respecting her input while providing support and answering questions that arose throughout the process. Their relationship was mutually beneficial, with Maria valuing Izabel’s expertise and perspective while Izabel absorbed essential skills and real-world insights into managing architectural projects effectively.
Benefits of the project:
The exchange provided significant mutual benefits. Izabel gained in-depth knowledge of how an architectural firm operates, especially the managerial and strategic aspects like budgeting, marketing, scheduling, and client negotiations. She also developed a more comprehensive and holistic approach to architectural projects, moving beyond pure design to consider the practical and operational elements. Additionally, Izabel improved her confidence, task management efficiency, and decision-making skills.
For Maria, the collaboration brought fresh ideas and valuable critical perspectives that enriched ongoing projects in her studio. Izabel’s contributions helped Maria complete project developments while fostering an engaging and collaborative environment. Their shared professional understanding laid the groundwork for future partnerships and expanded their respective networks.
Future collaborations:
The NE and HE discussed plans for future remote collaborations, particularly focusing on architectural competitions and projects Izabel contributed to during the exchange. Both parties agreed to trial a remote working period for several months, exploring potential strategies for successful cooperation. Architectural competitions in their respective countries—Bulgaria and Spain—present an ideal opportunity for continued partnership.
